The Crisis in Haiti – What You Can Do to Help
These days, the Haiti crisis is on everyone’s minds — specifically, what more can we all do to lend support at this time? The situation is desperate and the need is immense. According to recent estimates, as many as three million people may be affected by the catastrophic earthquake that hit the country Tuesday. To date, 50,000 people have died and the region has been declared a disaster zone.
Priority needs in Haiti are food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support. If you want to pitch in and lend a hand, the best thing you can do is to make a donation to the many relief organizations working hard to help those amidst the devastation.
There’s a fast and easy way to help. Text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross. When prompted, reply with “YES” to confirm your one-time gift. Your phone bill will be automatically charged. I’ve done it several times myself and feel it’s the very least I can do at this time. (Here’s the Red Cross website for more information.)
Others here at the Artexpo office have donated directly to other relief organizations such as Doctors Without Borders, Oxfam, Grassroots International and Action Aid. There are lots of different ways to give, so be sure to take a moment today and give what you can!
