Success Story: SOLO Award-Winning Artist Boris Giulian
Congratulations to Armenian-born artist Boris Giulian, who claimed a [SOLO] Award for his outstanding work at Artexpo New York 2010!
The L.A.-based artist was selected as one of this year’s prize winners for his Alphabet Painting Series, “Un Corpo Molte Lingue” (One Body Many Languages), which is based on a pacifist philosophy and an appreciation for Internationalism. Within every image lies hidden letters from varying alphabets, giving each canvas a meaning beyond the obvious. According to Boris, each piece in the series advocates mutual understanding among members of our single, diversified human family.
“One of the central themes in the series is the idea that we can only gain respect and understanding by learning and communicating with different cultures, never by force.”
For Boris, the artistic process is about bringing fresh, new perspectives to the canvas. One of his favorite quotes is this following line by Picasso: “Why should I try to imitate nature? I might just as well try to trace a perfect circle. I prefer to illuminate ideas.”
Although Boris has attended Artexpo many times in the past, this was his first time exhibiting. He says he gained “a boost of energy” from winning the SOLO award and, overall, really enjoyed his time at the show.
“It was exciting, rewarding and informative. It gave me helpful stimulation and direction for my future work.”
Boris says he didn’t intend to sell paintings at Artexpo, as his works are scheduled for other shows abroad. Nonetheless, he sold several giclées and, more importantly, feels that he expanded his professional network and gained insight into the current art market.
“The ability to see what is brewing in the “art world” firsthand, and to meet art-appreciating public and professionals [is extremely important]. To artists considering exhibiting at Artexpo, I would suggest that they visit Artexpo at least once to see the quality of work presented in the show, and decide themselves if their work contains anything new or at least equal to what is already there.”
