Artwork of the Day: Woman with Wings, Tenold Peterson
I feel that I’m always seeking some hidden corner of my creativity that will surprise me and unveil a deeper sense of the beauty in life.
Working in a range of media including pastels, wood carving, sculpture and stained glass. Tenold investigates those hidden recesses of creativity in a studio he designed and built on his farm in the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range.
Tenold’s innate artistic abilities first expressed themselves in a series of Crayola drawings on the felt interior of his father’s 1949 Buick. A sculpture and fine arts professor at San Diego State University and other colleges, Tenold turned to glass art in 1972 because of its significant sculptural potential as well as the purity of color in the glass itself. He creates large-scale architectural murals, windows, doors, and 3-dimensional light pieces, which are in collections throughout the US and Europe.
Tenold has displayed works in more than a dozen one-man shows as well as many juried exhibitions throughout the world. He collaborated with jazz musician Paul Horn to produce a video that has been repeatedly aired on PBS featuring the flautist’s music and Tenold’s art. Tenold’s versatility has involved him in architectural commissions that incorporate his work.
Presently, Tenold is a board member and community activist for the Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts Center (D.I.V.A). D.I.V.A. is the visual arts hub of downtown Eugene, Oregon. Their mission is to be a catalyst for the visual arts through cutting edge programs that include exhibits, film screenings, artist services and innovative art education opportunities.
Tenold received his B.A. in Drawing and Painting and a M.A degree in Architectural Sculpture from California State University at Long Beach. His Master’s project, a massive 20-foot copper sculpture, has been displayed in California State University’s permanent collection for more than 25 years. His many exhibits and juried shows have included one-man shows at Galleria del Sol, Santa Barbara, CA; Thomas Jefferson Gallery, La Jolla, CA; Court Gallery, Copenhagen Denmark; The Hult Center for the Performing Arts, Eugene, OR and other galleries around the world.
