Today’s Artwork of the Day is “The Artist’s Studio,” an oil on canvas by Artexpo New York 2011 exhibitor Alexander “Sasha” Sergeef.

This virtuoso display of trompe l’oeil detail and opulent decoration, painted in the “interior portraiture” style of Rococco masters like Pannini, reflects the Russian-born artist’s surroundings in Rome. Sasha fell in love with the golden light of Italy on a 1990 visit, and soon took up residence in the Eternal City. The classical architecture outside his door often features in his interiors, street scenes and landscapes. Sasha believes objects “beg” him to paint them — ”The Artist’s Studio” is filled with mementos that evoke his client’s life and the classical world of the painting.

The precocious artist started painting at age 5, with Diego Velàzquez and John Singer Sargent as early influences. Sasha won his first art prize at age 9 and he went on to study at both the Moscow Institute of Arts and the Russian Academy of Painting. Today, from his studio in Rome, Sasha paints portraits and commissions, and his art has been featured in numerous publications, including a special Italian edition of Architectural Digest. Sasha’s work has appeared in exhibitions in Moscow, Rome, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Stockholm and across the United States.

  1. About Sasha

Sasha’s commissioned interiors have included the White House Oval Office and the late Gianni Versace’s resident in Como, Italy. His work has been championed by Italian Minister of Cultural Heritage Vittorio Sgarbi, whom he painted in the room once occupied by Pope Innocence X with the Velasquez portrait of the pope in the background. He carries into his landscape the same attention to detail, warm colors and respect for architectural form are found in his interiors.

  2. About Sasha

Lush landscapes and opulent room interiors, all filled with gentle sunlight are the specialties of
Alexander Sasha Sergeeff- a Russian-born painter known for the lavish homes and families of the aristocracy and celebrities in Europe.

Acclaimed for his use of rich colors and golden light, Sasha and 13 of his interior paintings are profiled in “International Artist” -an article “the masterful painting of inhabited sculpture”. See the Dec/Jan 2006 issue.

His richly detailed landscapes, portraits, interiors and still life studies have supported his reputation for painting in the style of the Old Masters.

To quote Sasha: “A home represents those who live there, a reflection of their personality traits, so an interior painting often reveals more about a person than a portrait.” He also comments that objects seem to speak to him and beg for him to paint them.
