Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Ardmore Ceramic Art

Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Ardmore Ceramic Art

Louise Irvine, Director of the Wiener Museum of Decorative Arts in South Florida, will take us on a journey to explore the thriving studio of artists in the Midlands of South Africa that create Ardmore Ceramic Art. For the last 30 years, local Zulu men and women have been creating unique artworks featuring exotic African wildlife and flowers. The Ardmore sculptors and painters have explored new styles of ceramic art in their expressive use of clay and intricate painting techniques. Their collaborative approach to design, with two or three artists involved in each unique piece, has inspired a wave of creativity in this remote South African community. Ardmore’s cooperative venture has enriched the rural economy and uplifted the lives of the artists and their families. In recent years, Ardmore’s distinctive ceramic imagery, a fusion of African and Western design influences, has inspired contemporary designers in other media, including textiles, wallpapers, and silk scarves by Hermès.
